Little and Big Reversed

squid's suckers
Our next project is going to be using charcoal and for subject matter we will combine two items, one verrrry verrry small, and one quite big.  We will, however, reverse their relative sizes, so that what is big will be tiny and what is microscopic will be enormous.  So start thinking about it, and see if you can't draw up some Irony.
What I mean by that is that somehow you should make these two items relate; for instance, instead of a flea on a dog, draw the dog on the flea.

So, consider the medium -- charcoal drawing -- and the size of the paper - pretty large -- and come up with some pictures that you can use as models. For the microscopic, which will be the background (huge) Google "Dennis Kunkel" and search Images.  You'll see stuff like this:

Step One: Print out some pictures for Thursday's class.  See you then. Vq

Serving Christ in Art

Hey, I know I haven't kept up this site, so there is no one, I'm sure, to see this, but here is a photo of the chalk talk  I did for the kids at Calvary last Sunday--the regular drawing and the blacklight:
The kids listened to the Christmas story and sang the Christmas hymns as I drew the foreground, and then the lights dimmed and the blacklight picture appeared... there were many oohs and aahs as the children reflected on the glory of God that special night when God was born a baby so that He could grow up to be a man who would be  my Savior, and the Savior or the World.

The Topic Is Texture

Have you noticed how almost everything you see has texture!!!

Some pretty good Texture Quilts there yesterday; thanks for your efforts.
Hopefully, this will assist you as you begin your Animal Expressions.  The purpose of this assignment is to explore how to use patterns and textures in our artwork.
Here is a summary of the steps we will take:
1. A texture quilt  (done)
2. Making a value scale from our texture quilt (we'll get back to that)
3. A pencil sketch of your chosen animal (be sure to choose a photo that includes a lot of texture possibilities.)
Your paper can be any size, but should have at least a 1" border (for 9"x12") , but more if the paper is large.
That is what we are working on this week.  If you need paper, email me to bring it Monday.  The sketch should start with broadly laying out the major shapes and need not include fine details or textures yet.
4.  Then comes the detail work in pen.
5.  Then watercolor.
6.  Then the frame, which takes a single representative texture  from your work, and you make an eraser stamp and apply.
7.  You will evaluate your work on this basis:

COMPOSITION

Created a 1 inch border.

The animal is the focal point.

The background habitat compliments the animal.

A Reminder for High School Art Class-

1. Just Girls--You remember. Psalm 8
2. Texture patchwork - finish and return to class Thursday.
3. Animal illustration - choose and Print, preferably 8x11 size, to work from.
Here is the project directions site: Durer Watercolor/Texture Animals
and here is a great place to find a photo: arkive.org  - also check the home page and the blog.
You may wish to familiarize yourself with Albrecht Durer's work: Google Durer animals and then  on the toolbar find Images.
4.  I will purchase a pen set for each student unless you tell me that you already have one.  I would like to collect $20 each for art supplies.

Thanks, Veronique
